Painted or Stained Cabinets: Which is best for you?

Categories: Uncategorized | Posted: September 4, 2018

Design trends and cabinet styles are always fluctuating and it can be hard to decide how to design a kitchen that will stand the test of time. Currently, painted cabinets have seen an upswing in popularity with most new kitchens featuring painted cabinets. Just a few years ago, it was the opposite, with most cabinets highlighting stained wood cabinetry. So the big question is: Which is right for your kitchen?

There is no one right answer, rather homeowners much rely on personal taste, budget and other key design elements such as countertops, appliances and room layout to pick the best solution. Here are some key factors to consider when deciding Painted or Stained.

What is your Personal Style?

Do you prefer a clean design with a smooth finish that highlights the color or do you like to focus the unique natural texture of the wood and cabinet design? Painted cabinets allow you to add a little extra to your kitchen from a clean white look to a pop of color. Stained cabinets, on the other hand, offer a more subdued color accent while highlighting the intricacies of the grain and pattern.

You will also want to consider the flooring, countertop, backsplash, appliances and even furniture when you are choosing your cabinets. In our Design Studio, our on-staff designers will help you select a cabinet style that will flow seamlessly within your kitchen and give your home a cohesive look.

What type of Kitchen do you have?

Do your children love to experiment in the kitchen or is the kitchen an adults-only zone? Do you enjoy familiarity with your surroundings or do you like to change it up often? While both cabinet styles offer great durability, stained cabinets are more easily touched up while painted cabinets are easier to refresh. Due to the uniqueness of each piece of wood and the ready availability of touchup pens, stained cabinets offer long-lasting beauty and easily fixed scuffs. Painted cabinets are a little harder when it comes to repairing minor wear and tear as paint colors can vary slightly over time, but painted cabinets are much easier to refresh with a new color or shade.

You will also want to consider the layout of your kitchen. Darker colored paint and stains work better in more open areas where lighter colors can help open up a more enclosed space. Don’t forget to consider any adjacent or connected rooms, such as café, dining or living room.

Where do you want to spend your money?

Are you an up and coming home chef or do you prefer to spend your time in other rooms? Do you enjoy having the newest layout and options or do you like simple and easy? It is not only important to know your design budget but also to know where the most important features are for those dollars. While prices have lowered on painted cabinets they are still more costly than their stained counterparts and there are many behind the door options available as well.

No matter your style, budget or kitchen usage – we’ll help find the right cabinets for YOU!
