Breathe a Little Easier for Clean Air Month
In the last few years, scientific studies have indicated that air indoors can be more polluted than outdoor air, even in large, industrialized cities. Studies also show that the average person spends 90% of their day indoors, either at work, at home or in transport. The good news it there are many simple, easy ways to help improve the air quality in your home. Since May is Clean Air Month, we have gathered a few tips you can use to breathe easier.
- Check your air conditioner’s filter monthly. An air filter should be replaced it when it appears dirty or no less than every 3 months. Disposable filters that are left for too long can reduce the airflow and spread pollutants throughout your home.
- Declare your home a smoke-free zone. Never let anyone smoke indoors and ask smokers to go outside.
- Keep humidity levels between 30 and 50 percent. Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner, as needed to maintain low indoor humidity and clean equipment regularly.
- Fix all leaks and drips in the home as soon as possible. Standing water and high humidity encourage the growth of mold and other pollutants.
- Don’t store hazardous chemicals in your home. Use non-toxic cleaners and hobby products whenever possible.
- Be sure fresh air can get in. Fresh air comes into your home every time your open a window or door, but it also enters through your HVAC system, make sure your home gets air from places that don’t add humidity or pollution, like your garage.
- Be sure dirty air and moisture from indoors can get out. Exhaust from kitchens, bathrooms, gas stoves and gas water heaters should go directly outside.
- Opt for flat flooring. Carpets collect and hold dirt, pollen and other particles. Vacuum cleaners without HEPA filters can blow particles back into the air. Flat flooring, like wood or tile, can be damp mopped.
- Decorate with live plants. Many plants such as English Ivy, Peace Lily and Chrysanthemums can filter out many toxins, including benzene, formaldehyde and ammonia.
